Ubi Caritas

Ubi Caritas was formed in 2011. This is a select a cappella group of up to twenty-two singers ages 16 to 28, who work for two months every summer, when many are home from college. They present a series of a cappella sacred concerts on the first Sunday of August that directly raise funding for area food pantries. The concerts have been supported by a dozen churches throughout the county and have raised over $10,000 for local food pantries. The name of the group grew out of the fact that they sang the famous Durufle motet Ubi Caritas as part of those first concerts in 2011. Every year, they perform a new setting of the text and it has become their calling card. In 2016 the group was awarded a prestigious Alfred Nash Patterson Fund from Choral Arts New England to commission nationally known Berkshire composer Steve Murray to compose a new a cappella setting of the text. Membership in this group is by invitation of the director or by recommendation from current chorus members.

What People Are Saying About Ubi Caritas

First I wanted to say how much I enjoyed yesterday’s concert. The kids (Ubi Caritas) are pretty amazing. I have to say how jealous I am that I never had such opportunity at their age.

I just had to send this brief note to tell you how wonderful the concert was this past Sunday. Those young people (Ubi Caritas) are extraordinary. They are so bright, caring and talented. I cried on the last piece. The event raised $340 for our food pantry ministry.                   Local minister

Now that I am settled at college, I just want to say thank you for this summer’s round of Ubi Caritas. Every year it is always a blast. It just means a lot. Being back here has made me see that getting to sing with a great group in a great community is really something special. So thank you!

Thank you for the gift of Ubi Caritas. I was very moved and pretty blown away listening to them. What a fantastic chorus: voices, musicality and “caritas” these young people share. Thank you for bringing this expression to life.

The time that I have spent with Berkshire Lyric, Ubi Caritas and the private lessons has really been such an amazing experience. I certainly wouldn’t be the musician I am today without all I’ve learned from you.

Oooh.. that was super! It brought tears. Thank you so much for giving us all that joy!
